Lord of the Rings Online dev looking at console MMOs?
LotRO developer recruiting a PS3/360 programmer
Turbine Studios, the team behind Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows
of Angmar, is advertising for a new senior console engineer for either
the Xbox 360 or PS3. No specific games are mentioned in the vacancy featured on the
company's own website, but it does call for the applicant to be
involved with updating Turbine's own MMO engine and tools to consoles. The engine currently supports both Dungeons and Dragons: Stormreach and Lord of the Rings Online. Turbine has also recently received a cash injection of $40 million
to develop new properties and foster development. Is the timing of
these two occurences purely a coincidence? We certainly imagine $40m could go some way toward solving the
problems LotRO executive producer told us about when he discussed bringing the game to consoles last month.

MGS rumour chaos
New PSP game, original MGS in the works for XBLA and more inside
MGS 4 is finally out this week, and so the rumour mongers are out in force with some willy-teasing info for us to ponder. The most interesting is word of a new MGS game for PSP: Metal Gear
3: Revolver Ocelot. It's said to be set between Metal Gear Portable Ops
and MGS2, giving you control of Ocelot. It's tipped to be unveiled at
E3 next month. A grainy off-screen pic of what looks like the title screen was posted on the official PlayStation Blog, although we'd say for a PSP game the screen ratios are all wrong - so it could be a presentation screen. Or just a dirty fake. Elsewhere, the PSone classic MGS is said to be headed for XBLA - it supposedly turned
up on Microsoft's strictly underground Partnernet service (Xbox Live
for debug consoles), where games occasionally appear months ahead of
the commercial release. We know someone who's had a look, but it's not there. So that blows
that one out of the water too. Konami wouldn't talk about either of
rumours either. It's no consolation for Xbox-owners, but it was previously revealed, however,
that the same PS1 classic would be making its way to the PSN Store for
play on PS3 and PSP, although that was only billed for Japan, and
Konami is yet to confirm a UK release.

Ready at Dawn finished with PSP
Dev behind two of PSP's biggest games has no more plans to develop for the handheld
Developer Ready at Dawn, responsible for two of the PSP's biggest
titles of recent years, has reiterated that it has no intention of
developing for Sony's handheld any longer. "With Chains of Olympus going gold in Japan, we're now officially
done with PSP development," the Irvine, California-based studio said in
a post on its website. "So today we sent all our devkits back and seeing all these boxes
ready to be picked up definitely marks the end of an era here at Ready
at Dawn." Formed in 2003 by ex-senior members of developers Naughty Dog and
Blizzard, Ready at Dawn's debut PSP title, 2006's Daxter, has sold more
than two million units and twice has been bundled with different
editions of Sony's handheld. The developer also took Sony's God of War franchise to the handheld,
and Chains of Olympus is listed as the highest rated PSP title ever on
Metacritic, with an average review score of 91 percent. More recently the studio finished work on a Wii port of Okami. "We initially set out to do games that showcased the hardware and
became flagships for the PSP," Ready at Dawn president Didier Malenfant
told Next Generation in a March 2008 interview. "We feel like we've
achieved our goal of not only making great games but making games that
are hardware-sellers. We've now come to the point where we have the
team, the technology and two IPs that we think would make absolutely
incredible games so we're going for it. "It's two totally different genres," he added. "We're splitting off
some guys to work on a smaller project, and those guys will rejoin the
rest of the team when the other project enters full production." Details of Ready at Dawn's next projects remain thin, but Malenfant
said that the third version of the Ready at Dawn's Engine is currently
running on both the PS3 and the Xbox 360.

Vader & Yoda adorn SC IV's box art
Or as we're now calling it: Soulcalibur the Star Wars experience
Box art for Soulcalibur IV has emerged, featuring Star Wars characters Yoda and Darth Vader prominently on the cover.
The Xbox 360 cover with Yoda is light and airy, while the
Vader-centric PlayStation one looks like it fell into the lava pit with
Anakin. Draw your own conclusions as to why the consoles would be stylized as light and dark... The cover art is yet another sign that the game will be more Star
Wars focused than just featuring a couple of characters that you can
unlock. Especially in the marketing budget department. Only last week, it was revealed that the Secret Apprentice from The Force Unleashed would also be in the game.
With almost two months left until it hits shelves, we can only
speculate what new revelations will come before the game falls into our
hands. Unlockable Ewoks, anyone?

Microsoft attacks RPG genre
Infinite Undiscovery, Tales of Vesperia, Last Remnant and Star Ocean 4 show their stuff
As promised Microsoft's 'RPG Premiere' has just come to a close in
Japan and there are enough stats here to give even the most casual RPG
fan the horn. One thing's for sure, MS isn't going down in Japan
without a fight. Let's get right to it. First up is Namco Bandai's colourful Tales of
Vesperia, which has been confirmed for release this August in Japan and
the US, with us dirty Europeans having to wait a far longer into 2009. It's not all bad news for us though; there's a demo planned to
arrive on Marketplace this month, so you get eight months to decide
whether or not to buy it. But as expected, Square Enix took centre stage, showcasing three RPGs that will be coming to Xbox 360 in the next 12 months. It was revealed that the promising-looking Last Remnant will be
arriving on 360 before PS3, with a simultaneous launch worldwide this
winter. Namco Bandai, take note.
Above: 360 owners worldwide get first dibs on The Last Remnant
Meanwhile, further embarrassing the localisation team at Namco, the
gorgeous Infinite Undiscovery is due for a staggered worldwide release
in September, with Europe down for September 5 and the US on September
2.
Above: Square-Enix's latest undiscovery: giant purple squid
Last up is the reveal of Square Enix's latest Star Ocean, subtitled The Last Hope, which will be out sometime next year. A CGI trailer was shown at the event, apparently showing a more
science fiction art style and not much in the way of plot. It should be
decent.
Above: Blonde hero versus giant lizard - the eternal battle rages on in Star Ocean: The Last Hope
Surprisingly there was no showing from MS-funded studio Mistwalker,
which we would've at least expected to turn up at the event. Maybe it's
saving Cry On for E3? Check out the game pages for Infinite Undiscovery, The Last Remnant, and Tales of Vesperia for more.

PS3 Firmware 2.4 out June 18?
"Unnamed sources" date PS3's next major update
PS3 Firmware 2.4 - the one we're all waiting for - will be out on June 18, claim "unnamed sources" in Holland. Version 2.4 is expected to introduce the much-requested in-game
communication features to the console, as well as an Achievement-point
equivalent Trophy system and other goodies. "Summer" is the only official word Sony has given on 2.4's arrival,
with June heavily tipped. The June 18 report from Dutch site
PlayStation Only claims previous rumours of a June 10 release are false. It's all speculation until Sony gives the official word, which we expect will be any time now.

Sony discontinues MotorStorm PS3 bundle Out with the old, in with the new
Sony has confirmed that the 80GB PlayStation 3 MotorStorm bundle is no longer being supplied to retailers. "Retailers aren't getting any new inventory of the 80GB MotorStorm bundle," the company said in a statement issued to Joystiq. Sony is not discontinuing the 80GB PS3 entirely though, instead
switching its focus to newer titles. A new 80GB bundle featuring a copy
of Metal Gear Solid 4 and a DualShock 3 controller will be released in
North America on June 12 to coincide with the game's release. A limited-edition "Gun Metal Gray" PS3 MGS4 bundle will also be made available exclusively through Konami's website.

New Prince of Persia is "spiritual successor to Sands of Time" 'I bet my job it won't alienate fans,' promises producer
Despite the drastic new art style and dark themes of recent trailers
for the new Prince of Persia, producer Ben Mattes says that it won't
alienate fans of the much-respected last-gen trilogy. When asked if radical changes may alienate loyal fans, Mattes told
us: "I would bet my job that the answer is no. You've seen some dark
stuff because that's kind of what we want to show you at the start, but
more than anything before this is the spiritual successor to the Sands
of Time." He went on to explain: "There's tons of platforming and there's that
mystical theme that was so critical in Sands of Time. If anything I
think we'll see the fans that lapsed after Sands of Time come back." That said, Mattes also reckons Warrior Within fans'll be pleased
too. "The people who liked the edgier stuff in Warrior Within we'll
hopefully come back as well, because we've got that." Keep your eye out for the full interview.
